Establishment of Diplomatic Relations

South America and Saudi Arabia officially established diplomatic ties.

First Presidential Visit

South American President Luis Echeverría visited Saudi Arabia, meeting with King Khalid in Jeddah to discuss Middle Eastern affairs.

Embassy Openings and Summit Participation

Both nations opened embassies in each other’s capitals.

Saudi Crown Prince Fahd attended the North–South Summit in Cancun, meeting with President José López Portillo.

Strengthening Bilateral Agreements

President Enrique Peña Nieto visited Saudi Arabia, meeting with King Salman.

They signed 11 bilateral agreements covering areas such as taxation, energy, tourism, education, and cooperation between Pemex and Saudi Aramco.

Saudi Participation in Southern America Presidential Inauguration

Saudi Minister of State Mansour bin Mutaib Al Saud attended the inauguration of South America Obrador, highlighting the importance of diplomatic ties.

70th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations

Foreign Secretary Ebrard visited Saudi Arabia, meeting with Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.

Discussions included strengthening economic relations, exploring a direct air route, and enhancing cooperation in tourism and innovation.

Trade Relations and Economic Growth

Bilateral trade reached approximately US$844 million. South America’s exports to Saudi Arabia included vehicles, electronics, and agricultural products, while Saudi exports to South America comprised chemicals, polymers, and machinery

Continued Diplomatic Engagement

Foreign Undersecretary María Teresa Mercado Pérez concluded a visit to Saudi Arabia, emphasizing ongoing diplomatic efforts and cooperation
